Sustainable Shopping for National Recycling Week 

Green Connect is inviting the people of the Illawarra to shop for treasures or donate items for reuse at its thriving retail outlets throughout National Recycling Week, 7-11 November, this year. 

“We are pleased to announce that last year we diverted 160 tonnes of waste in the Illawarra through our recycling and other waste initiatives,” said Robert Servine, the General Manager of Green Connect. “The Op Shops have certainly made a huge contribution to that.”

Building The Circular Economy for National Recycling Week 

Despite floods and other disruptions, it’s been a bumper year for Soft Landing operations Australia-wide, said General Manager Chris Richards today, “and National Recycling Week is a great opportunity for us to share the wins with the whole community.” 

Overall, the social enterprise diverted 8,800 tonnes of waste from landfill in 2021/22 and recycled half a million mattresses.

Award-winning social enterprise Green Connect is extending its impact in the Illawarra, opening a new op shop at the University of Wollongong (UOW) later this month. 

As well as selling quality second-hand goods, the UOW op shop will be an education hub and space to share ideas on recycling and sustainable living.

 Sydney residents help social enterprise break mattress recycling record 

National social enterprise Soft Landing collected and recycled a record 538,000 mattresses and ensemble bases in 2020-21 – 35 per cent of them in Greater Sydney. 

Announcing the results during National Recycling Week 2021, Soft Landing NSW Manager Joe Rasmussen said 2020-21 was the biggest year the social enterprise had ever had, with mattress volumes 16 per cent higher than the year before. The volumes included 191,700 mattresses and ensembles across the Greater Sydney region.

ACT residents help social enterprise break mattress recycling record  

ACT residents helped national social enterprise Soft Landing collect and recycle a record 538,000 mattresses and ensemble bases in 2020-21. 

Announcing the results during National Recycling Week 2021, Soft Landing ACT Manager Kylie Roberts-Frost said 2020-21 was the biggest year the social enterprise had ever had, with mattress volumes 16 per cent higher than the year before. The volumes included 44,855 mattresses and ensembles across the ACT.
